Mid-roll Break Targeting

Note: This feature applies to mid-roll ad breaks only and needs to be enabled for your account. Contact your Account Manager if you want to use the Mid-roll Break Targeting feature. Enabling the Mid-roll Break Targeting feature also allows you to use the Advanced Mid-roll Break Management feature.

You can target a goal to one or more mid-roll ad breaks by setting mid-roll break targeting when adding both normal and sponsor goals through the Pulse user interface. This allows you to show certain types of ads in specific mid-roll ad breaks and provides greater control of your ad serving. For example, setting mid-roll break targeting to mid-roll break numbers 2 and 3 means that mid-roll ads from that goal can only be shown in the second and third mid-roll ad break. You can enter a maximum of ten mid-roll break numbers in a comma separated list, where 1 marks the first mid-roll ad break. If no mid-roll break targeting is set on a goal, then mid-roll ads from that goal can show up in all mid-roll ad breaks. Ads other than mid-roll ads are not affected by any mid-roll break targeting set on their goal.

To target a goal to specific mid-roll ad breaks, open the Add new goal page and enter one or more mid-roll break numbers in the Mid-roll break targeting input field. For example:

Set mid-roll break targeting

The configured mid-roll break targeting is displayed in the Goal Overview within the Mid-roll break field and can be edited for existing goals by double-clicking the field and entering the desired mid-roll break numbers.

Edit mid-roll break targeting

Target specific mid-roll breaks and ad positions

You can combine mid-roll break targeting with targeting a specific position in an ad break, for example, to specify that you want mid-roll ads from a goal to be shown in the third position of the second mid-roll ad break. Keep in mind that the ad position targeting affects all linear ads from this goal, whereas the mid-roll break targeting only affects mid-roll ads.

Mid-roll break targeting and ad position targeting

This provides you with a lot more flexibility when configuring your mid-roll ad breaks and allows you to reserve a specific position in specific mid-roll ad breaks for certain types of campaigns. For more information, see Ad position.

Mid-roll Break Targeting in Goal REST API

Targeting specific mid-roll break numbers is possible through the Goal REST API, using the https://api.videoplaza.com/api/1.0.cpvext/goal set of endpoints. You can pass in a maximum of ten mid-roll break numbers, where 1 marks the first mid-roll ad break.

Pass in the following (optional) parameters in the request body:

<midrollBreakTargeting>
    <midrollBreakNumber>positive integer</midrollBreakNumber>
    <midrollBreakNumber>positive integer</midrollBreakNumber>
</midrollBreakTargeting>

For more information, see Goal Requests.

Mid-roll Break Targeting in VAST and VMAP Integrations

When requesting VAST or VMAP tickets directly, you can pass in the mbn (mid-roll break number) parameter to override the number of the mid-roll ad break targeted by the ad request, in order to request mid-roll ads from goals targeting a specific mid-roll ad break. The value of this parameter is a positive integer, where 1 marks the first mid-roll ad break. For example, mbn=3 indicates that the ad request to Pulse is targeting goals which are targeting mid-roll break number 3.

Note: Pulse looks at goals targeting mid-roll break number 3, as well as goals with no mid-roll break targeting rule set, that match all other parameters from the ad request.
Note:

When sending in the mbn parameter, keep in mind that Pulse increases the mid-roll break number of each subsequent ad request by one, until mbn is explicitly set again or the start of a new session resets the count. For example, after an ad request where mbn=3, Pulse assumes the next ad request for that session is for mid-roll break number 4.

For VMAP integrations, where you request all ad breaks at once, Pulse increases the mid-roll break number by default.

For VAST integrations, where you request one break at a time and tie them into a session with the tid from the first response, you need to contact your Account Manager to enable an additional functionality in order for Pulse to increase the mid-roll break number of each subsequent ad request.

For more information, see VAST and VMAP.

Mid-roll Break Targeting in Pulse SDKs

From version 2.1.19.9.0 for HTML5, and version 2.5.19.9.0 for Android and iOS, the Pulse SDKs contain a mid-roll break number parameter in the request settings object. This parameter enables you to override the number of the mid-roll ad break targeted by the ad request and request mid-roll ads from goals targeting a specific mid-roll ad break. The value of this parameter is a positive integer, where 1 marks the first mid-roll ad break.

Limitations

The limitations of using Mid-roll Break Targeting are:
  • Reporting on specific mid-roll break numbers is currently not supported.
  • Simulating on specific mid-roll break numbers is currently not supported, however the progress bars take the mid-roll break number into account when running the background forecasts.
  • You can enter a maximum of ten mid-roll break numbers.
  • For VAST integrations, where you request one break at a time and tie them into a session with the tid from the first response, you need to contact your Account Manager to enable an additional functionality in order for Pulse to increase the mid-roll break number of each subsequent ad request.
